Architecture of 11M Memorial Madrid, Spain by FAM Architect
The monument that arises is as follows and responds to the ideas that have remained invariant throughout the entire process of definition, transparency and permeability.
Has two closely related parts and meaningless without the other. Irregular glass dome and the room below ground where it will actually look at the phenomenon of the dome from below where you can read the messages embedded in it.
The sculpture consists of two layers different in its material and construction. The first is made up of glass blocks and the second by an ETFE membrane where written messages will be printed the following days at March 11, 2004.
The glass structure reaches a height of 11 meters. It consists of a shell structure built of blocks of optical glass and colorless. The structural concept of the same back again to the construction of closed systems working in compression. Optical glass blocks used in construction will adapt to the geometry given to form and build the monument. This construction is closed and not allow the entry of water inside of it. It weighs about 160 tons and is completely transparent and colorless.
The second layer is the layer of ETFE with an approximate weight of 20 kg. in which messages are printed. This membrane is attached by suction. Some fans will create a gap between the two skins that will allow the monument to remain standing without any element opaque to obscure the idea of the project. The messages will be seen through the glass skin during the day and will appear in a different way during the night. The interior dome completely dematerialized only consist of letters.
